Hypnotherapy involves the use of hypnosis for therapeutic change. Hypnosis is a greatly misunderstood phenomenon, many people believing it to be some sort of power exchange, where people are rendered unconscious in some way, and can then be made to do things that they may be unwilling to do.
None of this is true. Hypnosis is a form of conscious relaxation, during which the client remains aware of the surroundings in a surprisingly complete fashion. The relaxation is used as a way of strengthening suggestion. Thus, hypnosis can be seen as a method of delivering suggestions to help change feelings and behaviours. Please note that because the subject remains conscious at all times, suggestions that are distasteful or unwanted cannot be employed, so clients are naturally protected from undue influence.
