In the 1970s I developed an interest in psychotherapy, and trained with a consultant psychiatrist in a health service setting. The method I was trained in was called 'Tutorial Therapy', and was very similar to the body of work now known as 'Cognitive Behaviour Therapy'. This method was highly effective in the treatment of anxiety, anxiety related problems of many kinds, depression and anger management, amongst many other issues.
In order to further my interest in this work, I studied psychology for three years full time, graduating in 1983 with an honours degree (2:1). Shortly after this, I trained as a hypnotherapist, and around the same time I started the consultancy that I still maintain. I have worked as a therapist in one form or another since 1977.
As a result of my desire to develop as a professional, in the 1990s I was trained in neuro-linguistic programming in order to enhance my skills as a therapist, and became a master practitioner. I was awarded my diploma in 1994.
Also in the 1990s I studied part-time for a master's degree in applied psychology at the Unversity of Manchester, graduating in 1999.
I have worked as a therapist in one form or another since 1977.
